Now is the time for accelerating energy efficiency and decarbonisation efforts, as discussed at the recent National Home Decarbonisation Group (NHDG) and National Insulation Association (NIA) Parliamentary Reception. The event, proudly sponsored by Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd (SBS), brought together more than 150 leaders in the energy efficiency sector.

Hosted in the House of Lords’ Cholmondeley Room and Terrace by Lord Best, the event provided a platform for meaningful discussions with key figures, including Bill Esterson MP, chair of the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, and Selvin Brown, director of Net Zero Buildings – domestic at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The day highlighted the progress made in retrofitting the UK’s housing stock while recognising the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. With a renewed commitment from the government to energy efficiency and collaboration between public and private sectors, the momentum for sustainable housing is stronger than ever.

Capturing the essence of the event, Derek Horrocks, chair of both the NHDG and NIA said: “The challenges we face have been identified, but there is confidence and trust that the rising investment in retrofit measures and clean energy will be effective in improving the lives of millions of people. Events like these are a reminder of our collective power and influence to drive lasting change.”

Gary Lawson, our managing director at SBS echoed this sentiment: “The NHDG is a very unique group, and being a member allows us to contribute to the collective growth in energy efficiency works. By working together, we can overcome barriers, achieve economies of scale and enhance the delivery and results of retrofit projects.

“The time is now. Together, we have a collective responsibility to transform the UK’s housing stock and communities. We look forward to another year of making progress and improving lives in 2025.”

Demonstrating collaboration in action, the event followed a successful NHDG forum, where the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, RISE and Greater Manchester Combined Authority shared their insights and ambitions for the retrofit sector – the resounding message of which was clear – retrofit can’t wait.

The Parliamentary Reception served as powerful reminder of the opportunities within the retrofit sector. With the next wave of funding bids awaiting award, it is essential that leaders of the industry continue to collaborate and innovate to meet the rising housing and energy challenges of today – ensuring no one is left behind.

At the forefront of this race, we are committed to creating healthier, more energy-efficient homes, while addressing critical issues such as health, cost of living, housing, energy security and climate.
