Daniel Owens – a long-standing member of the SBS team – has taken on a new role as regional director, strengthening our leadership team and becoming the sixth addition to our board.

Since joining the business ten years ago as a quantity surveyor, Daniel has earned a series of promotions taking him all the way to join our senior leadership team. His regional responsibilities involve him overseeing projects in the East Midlands and West Yorkshire, leading teams in the delivery of energy efficiency schemes for multiple major clients in the housing sector including Together Housing, Rykneld Homes, Incommunities, St Leger Homes and Futures Housing Group.

In the decade that Daniel has dedicated to us, we have experienced significant growth and now established ourselves as one of the leading contractors specialising in retrofit decarbonisation – delivering multi-million-pound projects to improve thousands of homes in communities across England and Wales each year.

Daniel said: “When I joined SBS the retrofit industry looked remarkably different, and it’s been a fulfilling journey to reach where we are now. I’m proud to have contributed to our growth as a business and I’m pleased to see my efforts recognised through the years. The scale of our current projects and the ambitions of our clients make this a hugely exciting time to be involved in the housing retrofit sector, while we also have our own ambitions to push into new markets and continue making the UK’s current building stock fit for the future.

“I am grateful for the supportive environment at SBS and the value placed on strong professional relationships. The increasing complexity of our projects since 2015 underscores the importance of the deep-seated collaboration that has enabled us to maintain our high standards. My responsibilities will now encompass both operational delivery and strategic business development within my designated region, indicating a continued commitment to hard work and growth.”

Daniel will join chairman Derek Horrocks, managing director Gary Lawson, and existing regional directors Steve Roberts, Ian Jones, and Mike Easdon on the now six-man board of directors.

For Daniel, project responsibilities include quality assurance, upholding health & safety protocols, supply chain management, and ensuring project compliance with all contractual, programming, and regulatory obligations including PAS 2030/2035 – while working with the board to steer us into a healthy and successful future.

Gary Lawson said: “Daniel is a real success story here at SBS. He’s worked incredibly hard over the past decade and is an example of the opportunities that are being provided by the business for employees to progress their careers, allowing them to take on more responsibility and influence the future of the business. He is very well respected by colleagues and clients alike, which is no surprise given his project portfolio includes management of some of our largest and most complex retrofit schemes.

“The directors and I are all looking forward to the insights and perspectives than Daniel will bring to the table as a regional director, which I am confident will be influential in helping us solidify our presence in current markets and regions while breaking into new areas of the industry and country too.”

We recently contributed to our award-winning status, after claiming Best Social Housing-led Retrofit Programme Award at the recent Retrofit Academy Awards and the Refurbishment Project of the Year Award at the 2025 Building Communities Awards. The wins were a result of our work in partnership with Rykneld Homes on a £21m decarbonisation scheme to improve 640 homes in North East Derbyshire, which was successfully managed by the newly promoted Daniel Owens.

Daniel continued: “When I look back at the number of homes, lives and communities we have improved, it’s quite overwhelming. We never lose sight of why we do what we do, and the benefits that retrofit decarbonisation provides to households, including some of the most vulnerable in society, but the scale of our achievements evokes immense pride and is a continued source of inspiration to be part of the SBS journey.”
