In partnership with Shropshire Towns & Rural Housing (STAR Housing), we’ve completed the first phase of an exciting almost £2 million retrofit decarbonisation project in West Place and Hammonds Place, Gobowen, Shropshire.
Funded in part through the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, the first phase has seen 26 properties revitalised both inside and out with extensive retrofit measures.
The measures included:
- External Wall Insulation system added to exteriors with a smooth render finish
- All windows and doors being replaced for enhanced energy efficiency
- Roofs receiving complete renovations
- Insulation improved throughout including 450mm in the roof void,
- The replacement of rainwater goods
- Upgraded soffits
- Ventilation enhanced with new units
- And stylish entrance door canopies added for both aesthetics and functionality.
The result has improved all properties energy efficiency ratings to EPC Band ‘C’, as well as considerably improving the quality of life for residents and lowering energy consumption.
Regional director Steve Roberts said: “This project has delivered a wide array of benefits to the residents through our retrofit decarbonisation works. As well as the tangible financial effect of reducing fuel bills, the effects also ripple out into better physical health of those living inside, as well as mental health.
“By raising the EPC values of these homes, we’re raising the quality of living for each and every one of the people who calls Gobowen their home. On top of this, when working in an area we like to stretch the social value we bring further, and so have contributed a new roof to the local Scout group which we were more than happy to help organise.
“This project was part funded by the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund. A fund which has, since its launch, allowed organisations like ours to build momentum in the energy and decarbonisation sector that would otherwise been very hard to replicate.”

As part of the social value component of the Gobowen scheme, tenant liaison Craig Williams, and site manager Paul Owen embarked on a revitalisation project of the local Gobowen Scout Hall after a productive conversation with Gobowen Scout Group Trustees.
It was discovered the roof was facing issues with its painted timber ceiling and roof trusses due to staining caused by past water ingress. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the decision was made to redecorate this vital element of the building, which, given its size and height, posed a significant challenge. To ensure that the renovation was not only beneficial but also supportive of the local community, we enlisted the services of Don Bradley, a skilled painter and decorator residing in the Gobowen estate.
